Meet Minneapolis Launches “Go Minneapolis Getaway” Sweepstakes

By M+E Staff

The public recently received three announcements from the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Convention Center (MCC) discussing further eco-focused initiatives, tourism promotion and new branding for the convention facility. The remarks were made by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak; Meet Minneapolis President and CEO Melvin Tennant; and Jeff Johnson, executive director of the Minneapolis Convention Center at the annual NRG Summit for city planners and leaders on sustainable projects.

Last year, the MCC adopted an eco-focused three-year plan to help reinforce the fact that Minneapolis is one of America’s most eco-focused cities. The plan consisted of three goals to reach by 2015 involving energy efficiency, reducing water usage and cutting down on waste. After the first year, the energy efficiency goal is currently 20 percent more efficient, water usage is at a six percent reduction and 50 percent of all waste generated in the building is recycled. The building plans to keep up the current initiatives, while adding additional goals to decrease the current statistics even more.

Meet Minneapolis has already increased its original tourism goal for 2013, and has launched a new “Go Minneapolis Getaway” Sweepstakes aimed at potential visitors living in the 400-mile radius from Minneapolis. The online tourism driver was created to increase visitor counts to the City by Nature and the grand prize is a two-year lease for an energy-efficient 2013 Chevy Volt. Other prizes will feature eight prize packages, awarded on a weekly basis, which will include a stay at a Meet Minneapolis member hotel, a meal at a local restaurant and the chance to take part in a wide range of entertainment outings. Official rules, and information on how to enter can be found at GoMinneapolis.

Johnson also unveiled a new logo for the Minneapolis Convention Center created by Preston Kelly. The artwork aligns with the Minneapolis, City by Nature branding.
