About a 90-minute drive from Minneapolis, Rochester sits on the banks of the Zumbro River and offers a distinct blend of quiet suburb and fast-paced innovation. The city of more than 100,000 is the famed home of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, which itself brings more than 2 million people to the city each year. IT MAY BE HARD TO IMAGINE what SpongeBob SquarePants and private suites; The Great Serengeti Indoor Water Park and meeting rooms; Lynnard the llama and picnic areas, all have in common, but the answer lies right here in Minnesota.

The stately 1920’s Hotel Casa Del Mar, which sits right on the sand in Santa Monica, is always a magical place to visit. But never more so than when Derek Hughes is in residence. A "modern conjurer" and comedian, he’s performing a show he calls Insomnia in a private suite on a half-dozen dates over the next few months. Last week I spent 36 hours in Temecula Valley, hosted by the Temecula Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau. Just ninety minutes, and roughly as many miles, from Los Angeles Temecula offered a small-town infusion of holiday cheer that can be difficult to come by among the palm trees and sprawl of LA.
