• Two New Hires for Fairmont Austin

Thomas J.W. Voss has just been appointed managing director of the 1,048-room-Fairmont Austin, opening the summer of next year. He will be responsible for overall operations, performance and strategic direction for the newest and largest Fairmont hotel in the U.S.

With more than 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Voss has held a number of positions, including executive roles with Starwood Hotels.

Before those, in 1988 specifically, Voss worked with Hyatt Hotels in a variety of different roles at different locations, including executive assistant manager in San Diego and general manager in Atlanta, San Diego and others. In 2005, he was appointed president of the Grand Del Mar Resort & Spa in San Diego. During his time there, the resort landed the number one spot of US hotels on TripAdvisor and received three Forbes Five-Star Awards: Lodging, Spa and Dining.

In 2015, Voss moved to his current role as president of the resort division for the Manchester Hospitality Group in San Diego.

Fairmont Austin also recently hired Nenad Praporski as hotel manager. Praporski will work with Voss in overall management and strategic direction of the hotel. He also will support all operating departments.

Prior to working with Fairmont Austin, Praporski was part of the opening team at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay (now Delano), Las Vegas. After that, he joined MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas where he held numerous positions, including front desk manager and assistant hotel manager. After relocating to New York, Praporski was the front office manager at Grand Hyatt New York and then director of rooms, front office manager, Grand Hyatt Regency Long Island, New York. In 2010 Praporski joined the Grand Del Mar, San Diego as executive director of rooms. He relocated again to Macau in his most recent role, as executive director of hotel operations, Wynn Palace.

Leah Henderson was recently appointed pastry chef for D'Amico Catering. We caught up with her to learn more about her experiences in the industry... and her personal favorite sweet treats.

What are you looking forward to in your new role as pastry chef?

I’ve had the pleasure to work in fine dining for the past 25 years. Now, I’m excited to incorporate that level of perfection to elevate D’Amico Catering’s pastry program, especially at some of our more upscale venues and events.

 

Asha Hassan, a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Minneapolis-Downtown (Convention Center) has been named the “Hospitality Hero” award winner for the third quarter of 2018 by Meet Minneapolis, Convention and Visitors Association. This honor is for an individual or company that has made valuable contributions to the image and culture of Minneapolis through outstanding hospitality and service.

 

Lela Restaurant has rolled out new lunch and dinner menus, created by new executive chef Thomas Orbison.

Chef Orbison discovered his passion and talent for cooking following his career in the United States Air Force. “After six years in the military, I developed a passion for cooking and moved to Paris to study at Le Cordon Bleu, which is like Harvard for chefs,” said Orbison.

Now that he’s back in Minnesota for the first time since 2004, Orbison is excited to launch some new entrees in the southwest metro.
